Antone Matysek was the most famous physique of the pre-World War One era. Now in his 64th year, he still presents a very powerful figure. This is doubly interesting, because he has only recently been discharged from a TB Sanitarium, where a resumption of training brought him back to health. Antone won the title of America's Strongest Man in 1918.

The Grimek family spent their summer vacation on the Shore at Cape May. Here you see John and Angela and their well-tanned family. They are all here but teen-age Reggie who must have found other things to do when this shot was taken.

The Arland Fishers are familiar figures on the beach at Miami where he conducts the famous York A. C. Arland is a former Florida lifting champion, and with Stan Stanczyk, has done much to promote weighttraining in the Miami area.

Three barbell men gather at a Rotary International Club dinner given in their honor at Cape May, N. J., to receive awards for outstanding heroism: that of saving the lives of several Catholic nuns who were overcome by the strong surf before the bathing season was officially opened. Shown getting his award from the chairman of the club is, Harold Cannone and, on his left, his twin brother Arnold, both of whom work as life guards at the Cape during the season. In the background is Police Officer Maurice Catacio who also aided in the dramatic rescue and was cited for out-

standing courage. Maurice has promoted the Mr. South Jersey contest for the past two years in collaboration with Robert Steger, an event which is an annual affair.

STRENGTH AND HEALTH

Now

[ow Weight-lifters have proven their ability at still another sport-Spearfishing. The Bosco WL Club, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., recently won the Florida AAU Spearfishing Meet against 13 teams from Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Kentucky. Runner-up was the University of Miami's Sea Devils. Five of the six trophies awarded for various points were won by the Bosco Boys. Skindiving and spearfishing are presently enjoying a surge of popularity all over the country and of course Florida with its crystal clear water and year 'round warm climate is the natural leader in this relatively new sport. The Ft. Lauderdale area boasts a large number of these under water enthusiasts and the list grows every day. Due to this expanding interest the Bosco club found that in its members it had some real talent, so arrangements were made to compete in this year's cham1956

pionships, which was actually a national meet as it was open to any AAU club in the country.

Proving that muscle and underwater spearfishing go hand in hand were our finny Boscoites Dick Smith, Craig Whitehead, John Rancken, Bill Strandhagen,, Bob Rankine, and Jon Strandhagen. These boys who have all been on weightlifting or bodybuilding routines for six months to a year, have found the increased strength and extra lung capacity from plenty of deep breathing exercises, give them lots of help on their underwater adventures.

To fully appreciate the tremendous physical stamina that it takes to become a good skindiver here are a few of the rules the boys had to follow during the championships. Competition was during a four hour period (Continued on page 57)
